Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi
Yale Strom is a violinist and ethnographer who began conducting field research among the remaining Jewish and Romani communities in Eastern Europe in the 1980s. He traveled extensively throughout the region, particularly uncovering unrecorded folk melodies in the Carpathian Mountains and in the area formerly known as Bessarabia. Strom used his findings as inspiration to write books and plays, direct documentary films, curate photo exhibitions, and form his klezmer/Romani band Hot Pstromi. The band's latest recording, The Wolf and The Lamb (released by Naxos/Arc and recorded live in the Shakh Synagogue in Holešov), features Strom, Schwartz, Dvorský, and Yasinsky, along with American musicians Peter Stan and Norbert Stachel. The concert on July 22 will showcase many of the traditional tunes Strom discovered, as well as his own original compositions. The performance will also include a high degree of improvisation from each musician, drawing on influences from jazz, avant-garde, bluegrass, classical, and other genres.
