The „Bohemia After Dark“ Project (UK/CZ/UKR)
This Prague-based international “boptet” performs hard-swinging arrangements of classics and neglected gems from the “golden age” of bebop in the 1940s through to the early hard bop of the mid-1950s, inspired by the work of two of bebop’s lesser-known pioneers, drummer Kenny Clarke (1914-1985) and bassist Oscar Pettiford (1922-1960). The project is named after Pettiford’s composition “Bohemia After Dark” and Clarke’s iconic album of the same name (Savoy, 1955), which followed the opening of the “Café Bohemia” jazz club in New York and launched the career of hard bop legend Cannonball Adderley. Other bop giants featured in the band’s repertoire include Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Tadd Dameron, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Miles Davis and John Lewis, as well as the singers Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae and Annie Ross. This is the band’s first appearance at Jazz Dock and features a special extended line-up of the project’s members to mark the joint birthday of leader Ben Hague (50) and altoist Andy Schofield (55) and also the 75th anniversary of the first bebop sessions recorded for release in Europe (Kenny Clarke and his 52nd Street Boys, New York, 5.9.1946)!
