British singer, songwriter, and guitarist Sunjay presents his new album "I’m Just Like You", released on November 11th, 2024, to mark the 80th birthday of American singer-songwriter Chris Smither. The album is a tribute in the form of a 15-track collection of Smither's songs, which Sunjay has sensitively interpreted with great respect for the originals – faithfully preserving the guitar parts while adding his own flavor through the arrangements and production. The album, co-produced by Sunjay and Josh Clark at Get Real Studios in Bath, UK, originally began as a personal birthday gift.
"I just wanted to record something for Chris as a birthday present. But the deeper I got into it, the more I felt these songs deserved to be heard by more people. That’s how it turned into a full-fledged project," Sunjay explains. He first discovered Smither’s music at the age of sixteen, after stumbling upon it through a Bonnie Raitt album. "I was sitting on YouTube and was completely mesmerized. I thought – that’s exactly what I want to do – that guitar style, that gravelly voice, those lyrics. Even that hairstyle!" he recalls with a laugh. Later, he had the opportunity to meet Chris in person, play guitar with him, and even open for him several times. "I’m Just Like You" is not only a musical tribute but also a deeply personal statement – a story about finding inspiration, discovering one’s heroes, and shaping one's own artistic voice through admiration and respect.
