Producer and versatile drummer Richard Spaven is definitely not afraid to go out on his own on adventurous musical journeys. Last in 2017, he defied all genres and impressed fans with his uncompromising solo album called The Self. While originally a jazz drummer, he affirms his love for club culture and smart electronics, blending jazz with drum’n’bass to broken beats to dubstep and more. All combined with Richard's uniquely subtle style, which has made him a sought-after performer around the world, and great collaborations with other performers to ensure the album´s complexity and diversity. So that the album is not "Me, Me, Just Me," Spaven has collaborated and performed with many excellent artists including Flying Lotus, The Cinematic Orchestra, Gregory Porter, Jameszoo, Goldie, and Thundercat. Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t mean to hurt your feelings, but who can say that? Richard performs with guitarist Stuart McCallum who is best known for his collaboration with the nu-jazz Cinematic Orchestra, and bassist Robin Mullarkey who has performed with Natalie Williams, Roisin Murphy and John Newman. As our program curator, Adam says, they’re also a pretty big deal! The “1759 Outro” song from the 5ives EP was featured on Grand Theft Auto V. Prick up your ears in Jazz Dock on Thursday, April 26!
