The Ophelia Orchestra is an original, swinging and entertaining Norwegian band: ten white-tie and tails-clad musicians who play ragtime, cake-walk, early jazz, Brazilian tangos and foxtrots—all from between the turn of the last century and the early 1940s, in their original, or authentically crafted newer arrangements. Ragtime specialist Morten Gunnar Larsen, Ophelia Orchestra’s leader, has rummaged old music collections from New Orleans to the Ringvemuseum in Trondheim, and has collected a mass of original material. Central to the orchestra’s repertoire are composers like Scott Joplin, Eubie Blake, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Kurt Weill; unearthing instrumental rags and melodies from early Broadway shows.
