AMERICAN SPRING FESTIVAL
CARLA BLEY TRIO (USA)
A foremost American jazz composer, pianist, organist and conductor, Carla Blay composes music for large orchestras, choirs, chamber ensembles and small bands. She belongs among the legends of the free jazz of the 1960’s, when she gained great popularity for her jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill. She had become known on the New York jazz scene as early as the 1950’s, composing works for well-known musicians such as Paul Bley, Art Farmer, Jimmy Giuffre, George Rusell, Tony Williams, John Scofield and others. In 1964 she founded the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra and a recording company of the same name that focused on avant-garde forms of jazz. In the 1970s it became the WATT Records company.
Carla Bley gained additional audience thanks to recording with Gary Burton, a jazz vibraphonist, and Charlie Haden, a jazz double-bass player. Later she began to experiment outside the jazz scene and worked together with the drummer of the Pink Floyd Nicky Mason group, and she also did recordings with Robert Wyatt and Jack Bruce. She received many prestigious awards, including, for instance, the Guggenheim Foundation Ward for Musical Composition (1972) and the NEA Jazz Masters prize (2015).
Carla Bley performs all over the world with her own orchestra or with a smaller musical ensemble, especially with Lost Chords, and also with her own trio, which will appear in Jazz Dock. It will be her second appearance on the stage of our club.
